Humanity1 reaches Genoa after four days journey
After a journey lasting over 4 days, the Humanity 1 has reached the port of Genoa in northern Italy today, August 16, 2024, SOS Humanity International said.
It said “the crew is relieved that the 200 survivors can finally set foot on safe ground, although some had to be taken directly to hospital.
“Yesterday, a thunderstorm followed the extreme heat of the previous days. Heavy rain, thunder, lightning and hail made the journey difficult for our crew and especially for the survivors, who stayed on the deck. Long and risky journeys like this are unnecessary and avoidable.
A few days ago, SOS Humanity International said the care team on board Humanity 1 had to decide which of the rescued people could go ashore in Sicily – impossible without time for medical screening or knowledge of family constellations. Families and friends may have been separated.
“Many of the remaining survivors are severely weakened, mentally stressed and show signs of physical violence. We demand a near and safe harbour for all survivors!”
