Seebrüecke International has welcomed Sea-Eye 5, a civil sea rescue ship.

It said Sea-Eye 5 is due to make its first deployment in the central Mediterranean.

Seebrüecke International is an organization that wants safe passages and an end to the criminalisation to civil sea rescue.

The organization in a statement said: “Welcome Sea-Eye 5! The rescue cruiser Sea-Eye 5 was named in a festive ceremony on Monday. The Sea-Eye 5 is due to make its first deployment in the central Mediterranean as early as this year. We are pleased that the civilian fleet is continuing to grow.

“While the European states are failing to fulfil their responsibility to rescue people at sea, it is once again the civilian fleet that is trying to do something about the deaths in the Mediterranean.”

Seebrüecke International added that: “As the EU continues to rely on its deadly policy of sealing off borders, civilian rescue ships are important for saving human lives. Safe passage and large-scale state sea rescue are finally needed!”
