Three reasons we chose Rwanda as best place to resettle asylum seekers-UK
The United Kingdom government has explained its choice of Rwanda as the right place to resettle asylum seekers it is removing from its land.
The government identified safety, economic development and respect for rights of people by Rwanda as its key reasons for the choice.
The UK Home Office shared this in a post on its X handle.
It said: “Our migration and economic development partnership with Rwanda supports migrants to build a new prosperous life.
“Rwanda has proved its ability to resettle migrants and stands ready to accept people who cannot stay in the UK.”
Explaining why the government is partnering Rwanda under three headings, the Home Office said:
✓Rwanda consistently ranks as one of the world’s safest countries in multiple global indexes.
✓Rwanda is one of the world’s fastest- growing economies
✓ Rwanda provides full rights for all asylum seekers
The Supreme Court late last year, November 15 to be specific, declared the plan to move asylum seekers to Rwanda as unlawful.
The Supreme Court then upheld a Court of Appeal ruling, which said the policy leaves people sent to Rwanda open to human rights breaches.
The controversial plan to fly asylum seekers to Rwanda and ban them from returning to the UK has been subject to legal challenges since it was first announced by Boris Johnson in April 2022.
