Worsening weather leaves 55 migrants in distress
Fifty five migrants who left Libya in a rubber boat are reportedly distressed in the Central Mediterranean.
The predicament of the people was made known by Alarm Phone.
Their problem was said to be as a result of worsening weather conditions.
“55 people in distress in the Central Mediterranean!” Alarm Phone said.
“Yesterday night,” it continued “we alerted authorities about a group who escaped from #Libya in a rubber boat. They were only able to move on slowly, too dangerous for the worsening weather.
Since 6 hours we can’t reach the boat anymore.
“A relative, told us that the people in distress had called at 5:30am, reporting that the engine stopped & that the sea was very rough. Their GPS stopped working so that they could not provide any GPS position. Their lives depend on state actors now – but they cannot count on them.”
At the time of making the information public, it said: “@Frontex is currently searching the area for the boat, also a cargo ship & 2 Libyan patrol vessels were involved in the search. So far without success. Authorities ignored our calls for much too long & watched in silence as the weather grew worse.
We hope it’s not too late.”
