Humanity 1, the rescue ship of SOS Humanity (international) has been threatened with detention by the Italian authorities.
SOS Humanity (international) disclosed this in a post on its X handle @soshumanity_en.
The orgnisation regretted that after an estimated 1,000 deaths on Central Mediterranean in recent time, Italy continues to prevent rescue operations.
The post reads in full: “Our ship Humanity 1 is once again threatened with detention, because as part of the Justice Fleet, we refuse to cooperate with Libyan militias. Even after an estimated 1,000 deaths on the Central Mediterranean recently, Italy continues to prevent rescue operations
“The Italian authorities have preliminarily detained us after we rescued a total of 33 people from two unseaworthy boats in two rescues in international waters off the Libyan coast. In the second rescue, we prevented an illegal pullback by the so-called Libyan Coast Guard. 2/4
“Trigger Warning: Death] Also, during the operation, we discovered two dead people floating on the waves. Silent witnesses to the deaths in the Mediterranean, which must finally end! They remind us why every single rescue ship is vital. However, with Humanity 1 and Sea-Watch 5, the Italian authorities are now preventing two ships from carrying out rescues.Raise your voice with us: Free Sea-Watch 5! Free Humanity 1!
P.S.: More rescue capacities are urgently needed at sea. Support us in converting the sailing vessel Humanity 2 into a rescue ship.”
