Sea-Watch International laments casualty figures at sea during Easter

Sea-Watch International has lamented the casualty figures recorded at sea in the period leading to the Easter celebration.

Decrying the ugly incidents, the organization said “It’s been a devastating Easter. 19 bodies recovered last week, 70+ killed in a shipwreck & today our aircraft witnessed multiple abductions at sea by Libyan militias. Drowning isn’t the only EU-made danger: pullbacks to cruel Libyan detention camps are part of the border regime.”

In another post, the organisation said “Italy detains our rescue ship #Aurora despite 71 people missing since the horrific Easter shipwreck in the Mediterranean. After rescuing 44 people stranded for FIVE DAYS on an abandoned oil platform, we now face a fine of up to €10,000

“Now Italy unlawfully detains us. Again, on the claim that we didn’t inform Libyan militias of our rescue plans. But we ask: why would we inform militias who abuse, torture, and abduct people who seek safety?

“Italian courts previously clarified that Libya is no place of safety for people on the move. Meloni, you can try and detain us but we will keep winning in court. “
