UNHCR representative’s visit to Agadez refugee camp sparks tension

There was palpable tension in Agadez refugee camp following the visit of a UNHCR representative from Geneva to the camp.

The refugees were angered by the visitor’s comment that they will not be a priority of the UN agency.

The Refugees In Niger as they often called have been staging a series of peaceful protest to express their dissatisfaction with the conditions in Agadez which they describe in one of their posts as a barren land.

As of today, March 15 2026, the peaceful protest by the refugees had hit 539 without any positive response from anywhere.

Speaking about the mood  in the camp after the visit,  Amir Abdulkrem (@AbdulkremA61859) said:“Tensions rose sharply at the Agadez refugee camp following a visit by the UNHCR representative from Geneva. The visit exacerbated the tensions at the camp.”

Describing his feeling after the visit, Yousef Ismail @yousef_ism58349 said: “My blood is boiling. Her tone and choice of words are disgusting. When she said, “I don’t feel any empathy,” I almost smashed my phone. How dare she, coming from Geneva, staying in a luxury hotel with transportation, security, food, and air conditioning?

Speaking in the same vein, Khalil Hussein @Mayor_refugees said “At that time, if I hadn’t controlled my temper, I would have responded to her in very harsh terms because she is not qualified to work in the humanitarian sector. I don’t know why she came from Geneva and doesn’t want to listen to the refugees.#Shame_on_you_UNHCR.”
