Woman, dead child among people rescued from distressed boats
A woman, and her dead child were among the over 180 people rescued on international waters by the Italian Coast Guard.
SOS Humanity International shared this in a post.
It said: “This morning, a mother and her 3-year-old, rescued from distress at sea by our crew, were evacuated to #Lampedusa by the Italian Coast Guard. Also evacuated: the body of the mother’s baby, who was dead by the time our rescue team arrived.
“Our crew held a minute’s silence to mourn the death of the baby. We now have 183 survivors on board Humanity 1, rescued from 4 boats in the last 24 hours. This includes children and pregnant women, as well as people suffering from fuel burns and in psychological distress. 2
“Despite this, Italian authorities have so far rejected our captain’s urgent requests for a closer port. They assigned the northerly port of #Livorno, 2 days’ sail from our current location. We demand a closer port for the physical and psychological well-being of all on board.”
