Two babies, pregnant woman, 25 others rescued from distressed wooden boat
Two babies, pregnant woman, and 25 others have been rescued from a distressed wooden boat.
The rescue was carried out by Humanity 1 crew, SOS Humanity International said.
“This afternoon, the crew of Humanity 1 rescued 28 people from a small wooden boat in distress, including 1 pregnant woman, 1 child, and 2 babies. The boat was overcrowded and smelled of fuel. The engine was not running. No one on board was wearing a lifejacket.
“The distress case was reported by @alarm_phone. Once again, Italian authorities have assigned an intentionally distant port as the place of safety for the disembarkation of survivors: Marina di #Carrara, 1.150km away from the rescue.
“This journey will take 4-5 days, wasting precious time and disregarding survivors’ right to a prompt disembarkation. Every additional hour’s worth of fuel costs €125.”
