22 lives tragically lost as Tunisia intercepts 5,133 migrants
Twenty two people have tragically died after Tunisia guards intercepted 5,133 migrants.
A researcher who goes by the name Jihed on X disclosed this in a post.
The post titled ‘March Update from #Tunisia: Escalating Border Violence’ reads: “Guard National conducted 160 operations and intercepted 5,133 people, mostly from #Sub_Saharan regions, amidst alarming reports of desert expulsions and kidnappings by criminal networks.
“Meanwhile,261 #Tunisians were arrested as SC mediators and organisators
Tragic Losses: In 9 distressing incidents, 22 lives were tragically lost at sea, while unseen shipwrecks claim the invisible. Additionally, 88 iron and wooden boats were destroyed.
Over 1,000 tents—the scant shelter of those on the move—were destroyed. Amidst relentless rains, we chose to strip them of their last refuges. This is the harsh reality.
And as #Tunisia plays into the #European_border regime’s hands, especially in an election year.
“We’re betraying our own values. We’re becoming the watchdog of a merciless system based on violence and exclusion.Remember 2011? #Tunisia welcomed more than one million #refugees, united in support and solidarity.
Our values of helping those in need date back 3,000 years.
“We’re losing sight of this heritage, succumbing to a brutal border policy that is not our own. It’s time to wake up. We must not allow the European border regime to dictate our actions, eroding our values and humanity.
“#Tunisia can and should be a beacon of hope and #solidarity, not an enforcer of a cruel and heartless system.
#StopEUBorderViolence.”
