SOS Humanity mourns as 60 migrants drown
SOS Humanity International has mourned the death of 60 people who drowned fleeing across Central Mediterranean.
The civil rescue organisation blamed the incident on lack of safe refugee routes.
It said: “Once again, at least 60 people have drowned while fleeing across the central Mediterranean. On Wednesday, the crew of the #OceanViking were only able to rescue 25 survivors. One of the people in distress recovered unconscious has since died in hospital in Italy.
“Once again, people have died trying to reach Europe because there are no safe refugee routes but a lack of rescue capacity. At the same time, 3 NGO rescue ships – #Humanity1, #SeaWatch5, and #SeaEye4 – are simultaneously detained based on false accusations.
“Our thoughts are with the relatives of all those who have now drowned on the Central Mediterranean, the world’s deadliest refugee route, because the fortress Europe is favouring closed doors & deterrence instead of humanity & human rights.”
