Search and rescue is not a crime, but a duty, SOS Humanity has said as it decries the investigation of IuventaCrew.

“Yet @IuventaCrew has been under investigation since 2016, even though there has still been no conviction. Last week, audiovisual recordings and reconstructions in court made clear why the accusations are unfounded.

The organisation said human rights organisations like @Amnesty and @ECCHRBerlin have confirmed: “The criminal investigation against the #Iuventa crew and the accompanying media smear campaign, fuelled by the Italian authorities, violate the UN Declaration on #HumanRights Defenders” (ECCHR)

“In May 2023, three UN Special Rapporteurs publicly condemned Italy’s actions against the rescuers and called for the charges to be dropped. Six years after Iuventa was first detained, it is high time to stop criminalising rescuers and start supporting them!”
