Guterres has also made passionate appeals to Hamas and Israel with the aim of bringing an end to the conflict that has claimed many lives and displaced thousands of people.

As we are on the verge of the abyss in the Middle East, António Guterres said: “I have two humanitarian appeals:
To Hamas, the hostages must be immediately released without conditions.

“To Israel, rapid & unimpeded access for humanitarian aid must be granted for the sake of the civilians in Gaza.”

Each one of these two objectives, the UN Secretary General said are valid in themselves. “They should not become bargaining chips and they must be implemented because it is the right thing to do.”
