MSF urges EU to stop border externalisation as vonderleyen , GiorgiaMeloni visit Lampedusa
MFS Sea has called on the EU to stop the policies of border externalization and deterrence as the President of European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni visit Lampedusa.
MSF in statement went ahead to place three demands before the EU commissioner and the Italian Prime Minister.
The statement reads: “While @vonderleyen & @GiorgiaMeloni are in #Lampedusa today, we urge again the #EU to stop policies of border externalization & deterrence that have made for years the EU and its member states, including #Italy, complicit in the abuses and deaths of migrants.”
The organisation made the following calls:
1 -❌Oppose the implementation of the border management component included in the agreement with #Tunisia as it replicates a dangerous logic already observed in #Libya, encouraging more violent practices against migrants at sea and on land.
2 -📢Take stance against the proliferation of #migration “dirty deals” that offer no accountability or safeguards against human rights violations.
3 -✅increase the #SAR capacity in the Central #Mediterranean to prevent more shipwrecks, putting people’s lives and safety first.
