Conditions in Maiduguri IDP camps appalling- UN official
A United Nations official, Robert Piper has described conditions in two Maiduguri IDP camps as appalling.
Maiduguri is the capital city of Borno State. The state is located in the Northeastern part of Nigeria.
Speaking on his visit, Piper said: “I visited 2 camps in Maiduguri this week. Conditions for the 7,000 IDPs in El-Miskin and 50,000 IDPs in Muna El-Badawe are appalling. 1,000s of kids out of school.
“Hunger & malnutrition rife. And shelters intended to last months still in use 9+ years later. Our system is broken.”
In spite of the challenges, Piper said: “In Maiduguri 🇳🇬 we can & must solve displacement:
– Set the standards
– Sort out the difficulties
– Test new ideas
– Chart the course
“My message at the opening of Government and UN workshop to design a new generation plan for solutions to displacement.”
