Libyan coastguard intercepts migrants, steals boats’ engines- Sea Watch International alleges
Sea Watch International alleges has accused Libyan coastguard of intercepting people on the move and stealing engines of their boats.
Sea Watch International, an organization that saves lives in the Mediterranean Sea said stolen empty boats or engines are sold and used again for the dangerous crossing.
The organisation said: “We regularly document cases pointing to close cooperation between the so-called Libyan coastguard and smugglers. Here, we could observe how a ship of the so-called Libyan coastguard intercepts people on the move and steals the engines of their boats afterward.
“Stolen empty boats or engines are sold and used again for the dangerous crossing. A vicious circle of the smuggling network, to which the people are defenseless. Worn-out technology also makes the crossing increasingly dangerous.”
