Tunisia not safe for fleeing people, says Seebrüecke International
Seebrüecke International, a German organisation that seeks safe passages and and an end to criminalisation of civil sea rescue has described Tunisia as an unsafe county for fleeing people.
The organisation said this while condemning seizure of its ship, Aurora by the Italian authorities.
Decrying the actions of the Italian authorities, Seebrüecke International said: “After the #Aurora rescued 72 people from distress at sea over the weekend, our fears have come true: The ship is now detained for 20 days by the Italian authorities!
“After a 16-hour rescue mission, the Aurora was assigned #Trapani as a port of safety.
This is absolutely unacceptable! Tunisia is not a safe place for fleeing people, as the mass expulsions into the desert without food and drink and the growing violence against fleeing people show! #TunisiaNotSafe.”
Continuing, the German organisation said: “The fact that the #Aurora is first assigned an inaccessible port, that the rescued people were deliberately put in danger by Italy and that the ship is then detained on flimsy grounds is pure harassment.
For 20 days, the #Aurora will now be missing from one of the world’s deadliest borders.
“The deadly blockade of civilian rescue ships must end! We demand: #FreeAurora!”
