Nigerian refugee loses wife, child in Libya/Tunisia desert
A Nigerian refugee has reportedly lost his wife and child to hunger and third in a desert between Libya and Tunisia.
A researcher, Jihed, shared the information on his Twitter handle in the early ours of today.
For days, he said “I couldn’t sleep, haunted by the heart-wrenching story of a #Nigerian refugee. In the unforgiving desert between #Libya and #Tunisia he lost his beloved wife and child as they sought a safer future.
They were tired, hungry and desperate for water.
“As #Lybian journalist @ahmad_khalifa78 shared.
While he ventured out to find water, hope and a chance at survival, tragedy struck. His loved ones couldn’t wait any longer
They perished in the scorching heat, surrounded by merciless dunes, far away from compassion and safety.
” Another sleepless night, and this heartbreak leaves me with a profound question:
Why does the world remain silent? How can we be so indifferent to the suffering of these vulnerable souls? Their lives, their dreams, matter.
How I can break the silence ?
Border_violence is a reality that cannot be ignored.
The deadly consequences of #EU 🇪🇺 migration policies and the externalisation of Eu border regime in #Tunisia are evident
We must hold those responsible accountable
Our humanity demands more than silence it demands action!”
Jihed further said: “Every life lost, every dream shattered, is an indictment of a broken system. It’s time to ask ourselves:
Are we doing enough?
Can we stand by while innocent lives perish in the unforgiving desert, trapped in a cycle of suffering and neglect?
“As a #Tunisian who has suffered from the brutality of #borders and lost countless friends in #shipwrecks,I know the pain of this tragedy all too well
We must stand against border violence, denounce the silence
and challenge the complacency of governments and institutions. Let’s please use any platforms, our voices, and or any power to speak up, share their stories, and demand justice.
Let’s ensure that the tragedy of these forgotten lives sparks a movement that can no longer be ignored.
Let’s honour the lives lost by making sure their #stories are heard, their memories cherished
“I tweet tonight, knowing I will not sleep. It’s our collective responsibility to act. #EndBorderViolence.”
