EU expresses shock over illegal deportation by Greece, calls for independent investigation
The European Union has expressed shock over an illegal deportation reportedly carried out by the Greece government.
The EU has consequently requested the Greece government to carry out an independent investigation regarding the exercise.
The EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, disclosed this via her verified Twitter handle @YlvaJohansson.
She said: “One year ago I met with the Greek Government @govgr to discuss border management and I made clear that there is no place for illegal deportations.
Last Friday, 19 May, The New York Times @nytimes presented a report on an alleged illegal deportation, in April this year.
“My services have sent a formal request to Greek authorities that this incident be fully and independently investigated.
“It is necessary that proper follow up is taken by Greek authorities, also based on the new independent monitoring mechanism.The @EU_Commission stands ready to take formal steps, as appropriate.”
