US officials congratulate Amy Pope

United States officials have been congratulating Amy Pope since her election as the next Director General of the International Organization for Migration, the United Nations Migration Agency.

Congratulating her, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said via his twitter handle: Congratulations to @AmyEPope

on becoming the new Director General of @UNMigration . Her innovative leadership is sure to deliver positive progress and results for migrants, IOM member states, partners, and stakeholders.”

Elsewhere Blinken said: “Congratulations to Amy E. Pope on her historic win to serve as the next Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). We thank Director General Vitorino for his service and leadership of IOM over the past five years. Ms. Pope’s election reflects a broad endorsement by member states of her vision to keep people at the heart of IOM’s mission, while implementing key governance and budget reforms to ensure IOM is prepared to meet the challenges it faces. She also becomes the first woman to lead this critical organization in its more than 70-year-old history.

“As IOM’s largest bilateral donor, the United States strongly supports Ms. Pope’s vision and looks forward to working with her to implement the critical reforms necessary to create a more effective, inclusive IOM.”

Ambassador Michele Sison, Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs, U.S. Department of State said: “Proud to witness  @AmyEPope’s historic election as the first woman to lead @UNMigration ! The U.S. will continue to support IOM’s crucial work serving migrants and vulnerable people under Amy’s leadership.”

Ambassador Sheba Crocker, the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva said “IOM Member States have made their choice: @AmyEPope will be the next (& first woman) DG of @UNMigration! We look forward to her continued leadership at IOM & the results she will deliver for Member States, migrants, her staff, & all of us.

Julieta Valls Noyes, Assistant Secretary , U.S. State Department said: Congrats @AmyEPope, the new DG-elect of @UNmigration! We look forward to working with you on innovative solutions that work for all countries, host communities, and migrants at a time of great challenges but also great opportunities.”

Amy Pope in what appeared like an appreciation message posted: “Humbled and honored to be chosen as the next Director General of @UNmigration. I am ready to work with ALL our member states and global partners to unleash the opportunities provided by effective, orderly and humane migration

I have been particularly grateful for the support of @POTUS, @SecBlinken, @state_IO, @usambgva, @prmasstsec & @UnderSecStateJ . I look forward to your continued collaboration on improving global migration governance as I step into my new role. During my campaign, I had the incredible opportunity to meet with officials from  @UNmigration member states, facilitated with the support of the U.S. government. These productive dialogues will undoubtedly inform my future approach to building true partnerships within IOM.”
