NRC supports remedial literacy classes for schoolchildren in Yemen

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has highlighted the impact of remedial literacy classes on schoolchildren in Yemen’s Taiz Governorate, saying the programme is helping students strengthen basic reading and writing skills and close learning gaps.

In a post on X, the NRC said Grade 3 pupils at Khalid ibn Al Waleed School in Taiz are participating in remedial literacy classes designed to provide additional support to children struggling with foundational learning.

According to the organisation, the intervention is helping children who previously found it difficult to follow classroom lessons improve their reading skills, participate more confidently in class and reduce their risk of dropping out of school.

The NRC said investing in foundational learning was essential to improving children’s long-term educational prospects and building brighter futures.

The organisation added that the programme is being implemented with support from Education Cannot Wait (ECW), a global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises, to ensure vulnerable children receive the assistance needed to remain in school and continue learning.
