765 people have died or gone missing in Central Mediterranean since January- SOS Humanity (international)

No fewer than 765 people have died or gone missing in the Central Mediterranean since January, SOS Humanity (international) has said.

The organisation disclosed this in a post on its verified X handle, @soshumanity_en.

The post reads:

“About 15 survivors are clinging desperately to the hull of a capsized wooden boat. More people are in the water, some of them dead. Most of the approximately 110 people who left Libya on that boat are missing.

“At least 765 people have died or gone missing in the Central Mediterranean since January. According to media coverage, at least 180 people drowned, died of thirst or hunger, froze to death, or have gone missing while fleeing across the Mediterranean in the past two weeks.

“2026 is the deadliest start of the year so far since records began in 2014. As a consequence of political decisions, people with names, families, and hopes are left to die. Share your empathy, share this post – and demand accountability!
