Ninety seven distressed people have been rescued after Alarm Phone alerted relevant authorities, and civil fleet.
SOS MEDITERRANEE a European organisation for the rescue of lives at sea confirmed the people were rescued by Ocean Viking.
“Rescued!,” Alarm Phone said in excitement in a post announcing the rescue of the people.
Providing additional information, it said: “97 people who were trying to escape from #Libya called Alarm Phone in distress. We relayed their emergency situation to relevant authorities and the #civilfleet. @SOSMedIntl reacted and carried out a successful rescue operation!”
SOS MEDITERRANEE “confirmed the rescue operation when it announced: “Last night, the crew on the #OceanViking performed the rescue of 97 people, including 14 unaccompanied minors, following an alert by @alarm_phone.”
SOS MEDITERRANEE noted that many of the rescued people were dehydrated and two people required medical intervention.
“They had left from Zuwarah, Libya, two days earlier.The double-decker wooden boat in distress was found in the overlapping Tunisian and Maltese Search & Rescue Region, and the rescue was acknowledged by Tunisian MRCC.”
SOS MEDITERRANEE added that Italian authorities “assigned us the distant port of Livorno as a Place of Safety, over 3 days of navigation away.”
