Deadly shipwreck: Boat carrying people seeking safety in #FortressEurope capsizes

A shipwreck has been recorded in south of Kaloi Limenes, Crete, Greece.

Three bodies have been reportedly recovered while 25 people are said to still be uncounted for.  They are tentatively said to be missing.

Decrying the development, Alarm Phone wrote: “Deadly shipwreck south of Kaloi Limenes, #Crete, #Greece! A boat carrying people seeking safety in #FortressEurope capsized yesterday while the people were boarding a merchant vessel in rough weather.”

Alarm Phone said the people had called 112, adding that  “JRCC Pireaus instructed nearby vessels to assist. According to the coast guard’s press release, a #Frontex asset was present too. 20 people were rescued. 3 people died & were recovered from the sea. Survivors report that at least 25 people remain missing. According to Greek media, the SAR operation is still ongoing.”

It added that two Sudanese men were arrested for trafficking and are charged with causing the shipwreck. As per the usual practice of Greek authorities, Alarm Phone said these men are being scapegoated for the lack of safe migration routes.

“The borders of #FortressEurope & the regime that comes with it force people to risk their lives crossing the sea at 5 Beaufort and waves as high as 2,5 metres!”

Alarm Phone regretted that every day, Europe’s mass grave of the so-called border protection grows with every person who dies at sea. “We condemn these killings and mourn those who lost their lives in yesterdays’ incident. Our condolences are with their relatives & friends.”
