At least 18 migrants die when inflatable boat capsizes south of Crete

An inflatable boat carrying at least 20 migrants capsized Saturday off the southeastern coast of Crete, resulting in a confirmed 18 deaths.

Local media said that the inflatable boat was found by a passing Turkish merchant vessel 26 miles south of the island of Chryssi – also known as Gaidouronissi – off Crete.

Two people were rescued. A rescue operation is still ongoing; a vessel and a plane from European border agency Frontex, a helicopter and three merchant vessels are involved.

Winds in the area are moderate.
