Republic of Türkiye reaches out as 11.6 million people in Sudan need urgent shelter under Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan
The Republic of Türkiye, through the Ministry of Interior’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), has donated 30,000 family tents to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to support communities displaced by the ongoing conflict in Sudan. This contribution marks the largest in-kind shelter donation IOM has received for Sudan to date.
“This contribution from the Republic of Türkiye is both timely and deeply appreciated,” said IOM Director General Amy Pope. “So many families in Sudan are living without even the most basic protection. This support will enable IOM and its partners to expand their shelter response and reach families who have lost nearly everything, giving them a safer place to stay and a small measure of security as they rebuild their lives.”
The donation comes at a critical moment, as Sudan is facing one of the world’s most severe humanitarian emergencies, with 11.6 million people in urgent need of shelter under the Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan, while only 9.4 per cent of requirements are currently met. Millions of families have been uprooted by the conflict, many arriving in overcrowded or makeshift sites without adequate protection, left exposed to extreme weather conditions, disease, and insecurity.
DG Pope recently visited Sudan and warned of the alarming reality of an almost empty warehouse with limited critical shelter supplies. This drew renewed attention to the scale of the crisis and to the immediate need for additional support. The visit prompted a partnership between IOM and AFAD, resulting in the rapid mobilization of this large-scale contribution.
Humanitarian access across parts of Sudan remains extremely constrained. Many areas in Darfur and Kordofan remain difficult to reach, leaving communities without regular access to essential assistance. Despite these challenges, IOM and its partners continue to deliver emergency support wherever access allows, focusing on the most vulnerable populations.
This donation, transported to Sudan with additional support from the Sudan Humanitarian Fund, provides an important push for Sudan’s shelter response and will help IOM and its partners reach families in some of the hardest to access areas, including the Darfur region. It also helps raise much-needed awareness within the international community about the scale of shelter needs across the country.
Continued support remains essential to ensure people receive the protection they urgently need. For families who have lost their homes, shelter is the first step toward safety and recovery. Türkiye’s contribution brings critical relief at a time when many are struggling to survive. IOM will continue to support displaced communities across Sudan and calls on partners to stand with Sudan so that no one is left without protection.
