UNHCR, what hope for refugees in Agadez now that July is here?
July, the month that UN refugee agency, UNHCR announced that blanket food assistance at the Humanitarian Centre in Agadez will be phased out is here.
The UN agency had assured that food assistance will continue for the most vulnerable individuals after phasing out blanket supply but what hope awaits those who are not vulnerable considering the fact that they are also in a very precarious condition?
When people are hungry, there is a likelihood that sickness and disease burden will skyrocket.
Is UNHCR ready to handle any unpalatable development that could arise from phasing out food assistance to the refugees?
Since the refugees have demanded to leave Agadez following the hash and unbearable condition in the camp, could UNHCR begin to consider resettling them in another place?
We can’t continue to pay deaf ears to the cries of the refugees who have continued to hold peaceful protest to ventilate their grievances.
UNHCR will be held accountable if anything goes wrong with the health and lives of the refugees. The agency should live up to its mandate or ask the UN to review its existence.
African Union must also come out of its shadows and be active for once. Of what value is the Union when Africans are languishing in Agadez? Africa cannot progress with a paper tiger Union like the African Union.
Before film makers start thinking of acting a movie likely to be titled Sometimes in July, UNHCR should come down from its high horse and give the required attention to the refugees in Agadez and other places.
