Are remittances really the key to development? Jeff Crisp questions IOM
A former Head, Policy Development & Evaluation Service, of UNHCR, Jeff Crisp has questioned International Organisation of Migration’s post that migrant workers sent over $700 billion back home in 2024.
The post by IOM-UN Migration with the attached picture reads: “These cash transfers can change lives. They empower communities and are crucial in accelerating development for all. As we approach #FamilyRemittances Day, let us recognize the role they play in global development.”
Reacting to the post, Jeff Crisp said: “To send money home, migrants are separated from their families for years on end and often have to work under exploitative conditions. Are remittances really the key to development?”
