Since 2011, prisons in Libya have transformed into detention centers and warehouses controlled by “families” and mafias, effectively forming a “syndicate of organized crime gangs,” Refugees In Libya said in a post.

These prisons, it said  were built to settle scores, with many turning into businesses that invest in “human beings.”

The warlords and militia leaders responsible for these facilities boast about the number of detainees under their control, demanding ransom and money while extorting the wealthy, politicians, and others.

These families and mafia members according to Refugees In Libya

have gradually consolidated power, becoming increasingly organized.

“Over time, the mafia and militias expanded their roles beyond traditional military protection, acting as guarantors of economic transactions and arbiters in civil and criminal disputes.

“They have even extended their reach to areas like combating witchcraft and sorcery, taking on public roles as moral guides, preaching etiquette and ethics to society.”

Today, Refugees In Libya

said “ we can confidently say that Libya has moved past the era of disorganized militias; it now hosts a true mafia that has managed to establish itself as a fully-fledged state.

“This mafia not only receives support from within Libya but also enjoys consistent backing from the European Union and international agencies, which fuel and develop its foundations and structures.”
