Rescue gap widens, authorities fail to act- AlarmPhone
AlarmPhone, an organization that provides independent support for people crossing the Mediterranean Sea to the EU has expressed concerns about widening gap in rescue operations in the Mediterranean Sea.
in a post titled: No CIVIL FLEET in the CENTRAL MED!, Alarmphone said: “Four days ago, the last ship of the #civilfleet left the Central Med. This means that the rescue gap has widened again. People on the move are regularly left alone. We alert authorities non-stop to distress cases but they fail to act!
“While NGO ships are detained on false grounds in a cynical political game, #MRCCRome regularly refuses responsibility for groups at risk of drowning. The supposed “Rescue Coordination Centre” in #Malta is not responsive at all.”
Alarmphone also shared an SOS about 29 people adrift in south of #Lampedusa!
It said: “Alarm Phone alerted authorities about a group who fled from Libya. They report they are out of fuel & they have kids and some sick, elderly people onboard. There is no food + no water. They are very exhausted and ask for immediate rescue!”
The organisation also posted an SOS from ~22 people in distress off the coast of #Samos, #Greece!
“We alerted @HCoastGuard to this group. According to the people, the motor has stopped working & many of them are sick. We urge the #Hellenic cost guard to act now & send rescue immediately!”
