Women for Refugee Women has called for an asylum system that treats women with dignity and respect.

Women for Refugee Women supports women seeking safety in the UK to rebuild their lives on their own terms.

Condemning the resort to detention by the authorities, the organisation in a statement today, August 21, 2024, said “Today the Government set out proposals to expand the use of detention and increase the hostility faced by people navigating the asylum system.

“This comes just weeks after the racist, far-right violence which targeted people seeking safety and racialised communities, fuelled by years of dehumanising language and draconian policies being used against them.

Detention is not the answer. As the evidence we have gathered over more than a decade demonstrates, it harms and retraumatises women who have already survived serious violence and abuse, causing profound and long-lasting damage.”

Continuing Women for Refugee Women said, “There is an alternative.
We need an asylum system that treats women with dignity and respect and supports them to rebuild their lives free from violence and hate.

“Thousands of people took to the streets just a few weeks ago to call for an end to divisive and harmful policies and rhetoric which are dividing our communities.

“The Government should listen to that movement and stand up for a more compassionate, fair and humane system that treats women with dignity and respect.”
