Two people have reportedly died attempting to cross the English Channel.

According to Seebrüecke International, more than 700 people crossed the English Channel on Sunday August 11, 2024 in search of a better life.

The two people died in the attempt, according to French authorities. Their boat ran into difficulties in foggy weather.

“When the coastguard arrived, the two people were already unconscious and later died,” Seebrüecke International said adding: “This month alone, 9 people have already died trying to flee across the English Channel. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the deceased.

“Cold water temperatures and strong currents and winds, as well as the many ships travelling a very narrow route, make the Channel crossing unpredictable and dangerous.”

The fact that people repeatedly embark on dangerous flight routes, according to Seebrüecke International is a consequence of the European policy of sealing people off.

“This border policy kills,” Seebrüecke said.

“Whether in the Mediterranean or on the English Channel – Europe must finally create legal and safe passage and ensure freedom of movement for all people!,” it concluded.
