Irregular immigration: Police launch security campaign in Benghazi
Sidi Khalifa Police Department in Libya has launched a security campaign in Benghazi against irregular immigration, a statement by Migrant Rescue Watch says.
The first day of security checks resulted in arrest of many undocumented migrants who were subsequently handed over to Department for Combating Illegal Migration (DCIM).
The DCIM according Migrant Rescue Watch has repatriated from Tobruk Immigration Detention Center, 11 migrants of Egyptian nationality via Emsaed land border crossing. The group included 7 medical cases.
Migrant Rescue Watch also listed other arrests and repatriations carried out by the DCIM thus:
“DCIM transferred from Qanfoudah Immigration Detention Center in Benghazi 159 #migrants of Eritrean nationality to Tripoli (via Sirte) for repatriation or relocation to a 3rd country
“DCIM repatriated from Tripoli with IOM support ca. 400 #migrants of Egyptian and Nigerien nationalities.
According to DCIM Security Affairs Officer Mohamed Breda the Nigerien group was repatriated via Mitiga Int. Airport and the Egyptian was transferred overland for repatriation via Emsaed border crossing.
“DCIM Bureau of Investigation arrested an Algerian #migrant who was sentenced in absentia to 6 years and 6 months in prison for sexual assault, possession of unregistered weapon and resisting arrest.
The individual was transferred to Qamadah penitentiary for completion of prison sentence.”
