Southern Cameroons Refugees’ Union advises members against joining endbadgovernance protest in Nigeria
Executives of the Southern Cameroons Refugees’ Union have advised its members against joining Southern Cameroons Refugees’ Union cautions members against joining the endbadgovernance protest in Nigeria.
The protest is planned to hold between August 1 and 10, 2024.
In a communiqué issued by the union, the executives said: “Southern Cameroons Refugees’ Union (SCRU) SCRU wishes to inform all Southern Cameroons refugees in Nigeria that there are serious ongoing national agitations in Nigeria, for nationwide strike action or protest, billed to begin August 1, 2024. Anonymous tracts are rocking social media, calling for public protests from this date to under the tag: “endbadgovernance”.
“SCRU wishes to caution that our status, as refugee, does not allow us to involve in politics of host or home country. Consequently, SCRU calls on all Southern Cameroons refugees to steer clear of any public demonstrations.”
SCRU therefore “recommends that you stay indoors during this period, to avoid being caught up in any potential crossfires – which are possibilities in any public demonstration. You are encouraged to take necessary steps to be back to your base by this date. You are also encouraged to take all such necessary measures that will help you remain indoors for the duration of the protests, if that becomes necessary.”
Against this backdrop, SCRUN warned that any refugee(s) caught in the dragnet of protest-related juridico-administrative eventualities from their illegal commissions or omissions; or negligence, shall not benefit from the sympathy and solidarity of SCRU, via the intervention of SLAP (SCRU LEGAL AID PROJECT).
“This announcement, is, however, done without prejudice to the constitutional right of the good people of Nigeria to express themselves via whatever legal means appropriate.”
The communiqué said SCRU stands with the people and government of Nigeria at this difficult times, “during which refugees suffer some of the hardest blows as one of the most vulnerable facets of the Nigerian society; and trusts in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as a great nation and as the Giant of Africa, to emerge from it, even stronger, more united and more determined to achieve their collective goals as a country.
