Many migrants are said to have died, with 67 others rescued from distress at sea off the Canary Islands.

Seebrüecke International disclosed this today June 24,2024.

It said: “A cruise ship has rescued 67 people from distress at sea off the Canary Islands. Some of the rescued people were in a critical condition, dehydrated or injured. Four people could only be rescued dead.

“2 deceased people could not be rescued due to the stormy sea. According to the survivors, other people died during the flight, the lifeless bodies having been thrown overboard. We are grateful for the efforts of the crew of the cruise ship.

Our thoughts are with the deceased and their families.”

The NGO added that: “It has long been known that the 100-kilometre flight route to the Canary Islands is particularly dangerous because the mostly smaller outboard engines cannot withstand the strong currents from the Atlantic Ocean.

“Despite this, Europe is not creating safe passage, but is making it even more difficult to flee in many places. As a result, more people, not fewer, are taking the more dangerous routes.

“Whether in the central Mediterranean or the Atlantic – the deaths at Europe’s external borders must stop! We demand safe passage and freedom of movement for all people!”
