The 183 survivors rescued by Humanity 1 crew have finally  disembarked in Livorno.

A baby was found dead during the rescue operation. The mother and the older sibling were rescued alive, according to SOS Humanity International, a rescue NGO.

Giving information about the disembarkation, SOS Humanity International said: “Yesterday, 183 survivors were able to disembark in Livorno. But their journey does not end here. Most of the survivors were taken by bus to more southern cities. 26 of them are even being taken as far as Campobasso, >550km from Livorno.

“This shows that the Italian practice of assigning distant ports does not, as is often argued, facilitate distribution within Italy by relieving the burden on the south. Rather, it only serves to keep search and rescue ships away from the area of operation.

“This puts human lives at risk and denies survivors their right to disembark in a nearby port as quickly as possible! The rights of people seeking protection must be placed at the centre of European migration policy!”
