Louise Michel, a Non-Governmental Organization that combines the principles of feminism anti-racism and anti-facism has criticized Italian Prime Minister, and Maltese Home Affairs minister over their meetings in Libya on migration issues.

Louise Michel accused the Italian and Maltese officials of prioritising the issue of migration at the expense of human rights.

The NGO said: “May 7th saw the continuation of racist politics, following both the Italian Prime Minister and the Maltese Home Affairs minister attending meetings in #Libya, with the issue of migration being prioritised while human rights continue to be ignored.”

Malta, Louise Michel said, promised to increase cooperation on training and fighting trafficking, despite rarely responding to boats in distress in their #SAR area. “It seems they continue to prioritise illegal pullbacks rather than respecting human rights and the international laws of the sea.

“@GiorgiaMeloni urged for the cooperation between #Libya and #Italy to continue, stating that they have “already yielded significant results”. Since 2017, thousands of people’s human rights have been violated with pullbacks to Libya, defined as an unsafe country by the #UN.”

In Lybia, it said people will face detention, torture and slavery. “This was demonstrated when 107 people on the move were recently freed after being detained by criminal gangs, some for up to 7 months, many with signs of torture on their bodies.

“In order to uphold human rights and prevent further suffering of people on the move, both the Italy/Libya pact and Malta/Libya cooperation must end. We call for safe, legal routes for all! #HumanRights #EU #FreedomOfMovement.”
