Louise Michel, an organization that combines sea rescue with the principles of feminism, anti-racism and anti-facism has decried the practice of leaving people to die at sea despite having knowledge of the situation.

The organization described the practice as deliberate murder.

Louis Michel made the remark while recollecting an incident that claimed about 94 lives last year.

One year ago today, it said: “200 people were left alone by Italian authorities until it was too late. At least 94 people died.

“On the 26th of February, a boat carrying about 200 people sank just in front of the Calabrian City of Crotone. The position of the boat had been known for hours, both by the Italian Authorities and Frontex, but no action to rescue the people on the overcrowded boat.

“Just 80 people were rescued alive following the shipwreck that followed.”

Louise Michel said this was not an accident, noting: “Leaving people to die at sea despite having knowledge of the situation is deliberate murder. No one should be left to die at sea. #HumanRightsForAll!
