Netizens knock UNODC’s graphics on migrant smuggling
UNODC’s efforts to graphically explain the process of migrant smuggling has come under serious criticism from followers of the commission on X handle.
The UNODC Human Trafficking post reads:
“Have you ever wondered how smugglers operate?
This image explains the process of migrant smuggling
#MigrationWeek.”
(graphics attached)
The graphics drew flaks from Netizens, some of who asked UNODC to delete the post.
Below are some of the comments.

Please delete this, you are spreading misinformation.
Would be good to ask instead: “Have you ever wondered why people need to risk their lives to cross borders, use smugglers, and why safety isn’t guaranteed to protection seekers upon arrival?”

This is misleading and incorrect. Incredibly unimpressive graphic by the UN that disregards of research evidence contextualising smuggling in wider processes of migration governance.

This is a highly inaccurate analysis of smuggling, its dynamics and its interdependency with border control. I suggest reading the work of @luigiachilli @_gesanchez #julien brachet (among others). And the just published book Global Human Smuggling.

Well this is a massive over-simplification of the process! And completely ignores the role of states preventing safe travel and forcing people into the hands of smugglers!

Do I have to quote your own webpage of the international legal definition of human trafficking back to you to compare against this piece of pro-donor-governments’ and effectively anti-refugees propaganda?
