Seebrüecke International has hailed LHreports, and derspiegel investigation that uncovered that Frontex and Malta are systematically sharing coordinates of boats with fleeing people with a militia group from Libya.

It said the fact that European authorities do not shy away from cooperating with brutal militias is intolerable.

“In a major investigation, @LHreports, @derspiegel and other journalists have uncovered that Frontex and Malta are systematically sharing coordinates of boats with fleeing people with a militia group from Libya,”Seebrüecke International said.

“The militia group Tareq Bin Zeyad (TBZ) is led by Saddam Haftar, the son of the eastern Libyan warlord Khalifa Haftar, and is associated with human trafficking.”

Since May, Seebrüecke said the group had been operating a ship in the central Mediterranean, also called TBZ, on which they have already intercepted over 1,000 people in the Mediterranean and illegally returned them to Libya.

“3 communication channels have been found through which the TBZ receives inf8 about the boats: 1. through mayday alerts from Frontex aircraft, 2. through indirect communication between Frontex & the Libyan authorities and 3. through direct communication with Malta’s Armed Forces.

“This happened even though there would have been much safer – and legal – options to help the people on the move: Merchant ships were closer than the TBZ and could therefore have been on the scene more quickly, or NGO ships or the Maltese or Italian coastguard could have helped.
The fact that European authorities do not shy away from cooperating with brutal militias is intolerable. We demand an end to co-operation with all militia groups in Libya and with the so-called Libyan coastguard.”

Concluding, Seebrüecke International said: “We finally need safe passage to Europe and an end to the brutal policy of sealing off borders!”.
