Captured migrants detained,tortured in Bani Walid warehouse

Migrants from Tigray, Eritrea and other countries have called for help from Bani Walid warehouse in Libya where they are being held captive.

Bani Walid is a city in Libya located in the Misrata District. Prior to 2007, it was the capital of Sof-Aljeen District.

A post by Refugees in Libya said the captives are being tortured  with the aim of extorting them.  A video shared on  X  by the organization revealed how they captives were being flogged on their bare skin.

The Refugees In Libya post reads:  

“Lewam Addis Beyene, born in Shire, Tigray, is one of many victims who are being held captive in Bani Walid warehouse and are under constant torture in an attempt to extort 12.000$ from their families.

“We have alerted the authorities in Tripoli since many hours but no one has replied to us.The message we received from Lewam reads: “We paid 8000$ to pass us as human beings and we were caught by thieves on the way to the sea and they put us in a warehouse in Binwalid for the second time and now we are suffering from sticks and hunger day and night! So please brothers and sisters this money 12.000$ ,we are told to pay is beyond our means”

 Mercy Zeru Debas, also from Eritrea, Sheraro Woreda is among the many women and men predominantly Eritreans who are being extorted in bani Walid.”
