The European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE) and a researcher who goes by the name Jihed on X formerly Twitter, have raised questions about the fate of migrants intercepted by Tunisia, an EU partner.
Jihed in a post titled “#Tunisia Interceptions on the rise” said: “Yesterday Guard national conducted 20 operation with 223 intercepted-150 in #Sfax (121 sub-Saharan,29 Tunisians) and 73 in Nabeul.Seizures include boats, vehicles and funds.
Where are these individuals taken post-rescue?”
Also worried by Jihed’s concerns , ECRE raised two knotty questions that are begging for answers.
ECRE, an Alliance of 117 NGOs protecting and advancing rights of refugees and asylum seekers message is titled “Ongoing interceptions by EU strategic partner, Tunisia.”
“Important questions:
👉How are these interceptions respectful of human rights?
👉Where is the fate of intercepted individuals? detention? deportation?,” ECRE said.
