Jeff Crisp discusses frequently unanswered questions on safe routes
Former UNHCR Head, Policy Development and Evaluation Service, Jeff Crisp has shed light on frequently unanswered questions on safe routes.
He shared this on his X handle. The post is titled ‘Frequently unanswered questions on safe routes.’
The post reads:
– if the UK were to open up safe routes for refugees (as it should) would there be an annual quota/cap?
– if so, what would it be?
– would it be linked in any way to the number of spontaneous arrivals & refugee recognitions?
– who would be prioritized for safe routes in terms of, for example, nationality, protection needs, demographic profile, prior links to the UK, etc.
– would refugees be able to apply for safe routes or would UNHCR or another organization identify appropriate cases?
– where would safe routes start from: country of origin, country of first asylum or transit country?
– what settlement arrangements would be made in the UK for refugees arriving by safe routes?
– in other words, let’s go beyond the simplistic safe routes mantra and put together some proposals that address these and other pertinent issues
