Outside world neglecting Eastern DR Congo, says NRC Sec Gen Egeland
Secretary General of Norwegian Refugee Council, Jan England, has decried living conditions in
IDP camps in Ituri Province, eastern DRC.
The NRC scribe accused the outside world of neglecting Eastern DR Congo.
Jan said: “IDP camps in Ituri Province, eastern DRC, are home to thousands of families who have been forced to flee due to relentless & extreme violence. Many site lack even basic services – those arriving face horrible conditions.Still, people keep coming because they have no choice.”
Even in camps, Jan said people are not safe.
“In June, an attack on Lala displacement site resulted in the death of 46 people, the majority of whom were children and the elderly, unable to run. More than 7,800 others were forced to flee the site. This is one in a long list of such attacks.
“Across Ituri Province alone, more than 750,000 children have had their education disrupted due to armed conflict. Children out of school here are at extreme risk of sexual exploitation, trafficking, forced marriage, and recruitment into armed groups.”
Jan regretted that the outside world is neglecting eastern DR Congo. “It is a great shame on our shared humanity.
Funding is down just as needs are rising. Almost 80% of funding here comes from just 5 donors.
Where is the rest of the world?”
