Seebrücke International raises alarm over weather condition on Mediterranean Sea
Seebrücke International, a German international movement that wants safe passage and an end to criminalisation of civil sea rescue has expressed concern about weather condition on the Mediterranean Sea.
The organisation said the weather on the Mediterranean Sea has worsened – “just as @alarm_phone wrote on Twitter on Friday. Alarm Phone informed the authorities about more than 20 boats in distress at sea and demanded the immediate initiation of a rescue.”
Currently,Seebrücke International said it is unclear how many of the boats made the crossing. “What we do know is that at least three boats sank in the Mediterranean over the weekend.
“On Sunday, a boat sank off Tunisia’s Kerkenna Islands, killing at least four people and leaving 51 missing.
“Two other boats sank near the Italian island off Lampedusa, at least 2 people died there, more than 30 people are still missing. The Italian coast guard was able to rescue 57 people from distress off Lampedusa.”
Continuing, it said: “At the same time, the work of civilian ships continues to be made more difficult – whether through the detention of ships or the allocation of distant ports. The European policy of sealing off borders is killing. Our thoughts are with the survivors & relatives of the shipwrecks.
Instead of more sealing off borders and externalization, we need more rescue capacity and #SafePassage! #FightFortressEurope!”
