Sea Watch International, an organization that saves lives in the Mediterranean Sea has relived the experience and efforts  of Aurora  and PVolontaires to save 11 boats carrying 485 people on the sea.

A statement by the organisation said: “In yesterday’s operation of our #Aurora, with the support of

@PVolontaires, we were able to locate 11 boats with about 485 people. Our crew stabilized the situation for hours by handing out life jackets and deploying life rafts until Italian authorities rescued several boats.

“As darkness fell, the situation became even more difficult. On the instructions of the Italian Coast Guard, we took aboard the Aurora 52 people from two boats in particularly critical condition. Our youngest guest is one month old.

“While the Coast Guard patrol boats were on their way to Lampedusa, Aurora was assigned the port of Trapani. 4-5 times further away than Lampedusa, much too far for a 14 meter long lifeboat and for the people on board scarred by their desperate journey.

“Nevertheless, we go there. Since we can’t let our ship get detained again. And since we cannot allow people to drown with rescue ships being blocked again.”
