Lawyers for Justice condemns Libyan Coast Guard firing at SOSMedIntl rescue vessel
Lawyers for Justice in Libya has condemned reports of the Libyan Coast Guard firing at an SOS Mediterranee International rescue mission vessel.
Following the attack, Lawyers for Justice called on Libyan authorities to remove from position all those involved in alleged crimes against migrants and refugees.
A statement by the organisation reads: “Yesterday’s reports of the Libyan Coast Guard firing at an @SOSMedIntl rescue mission vessel is yet another clear example of unacceptable violence being used against migrants + refugees, and now rescue workers, by Libyan security forces.
“The Libyan Coast Guard’s use of an EU-provided vessel in this violent act also calls into question EU complicity. The EU must take accountability, investigate these reports and immediately end cooperation with the LCG.
“We also call on the Libyan authorities to remove from position all those involved in alleged crimes against migrants + refugees, including but not limited to those within the Libyan Coast Guard. Those responsible must be held to account.”
