Ocean Viking rescues 57 migrants
No fewer than 57 distressed migrants have been rescued by Ocean Viking on international waters. The first set rescued comprised 46 people. 11 others were thereafter rescued in boat in distress in international waters off Libya.
“Shortly after a rescue of 46 people, #OceanViking responded to a mayday relay about a boat in distress in international waters off Libya. @PVolontaires was on scene & confirmed the location of a fiberglass boat adrift with 11 shipwrecked people onboard.Two @SOSMedIntl fast rescue boats were launched to evacuate the 11 people in distress.
On their way back to #OceanViking, a Libyan patrol vessel approached them closely and started shooting multiple times in the air, endangering the lives of the crew and survivors,”SOS Mediterranee said.
SOS Mediterranee, a European Organisation for the rescue of lives at sea subsequently announced the rescue of the distressed migrants.
“#OceanViking rescued 11 people following a mayday relay. During the operation, @SOSMedIntl crew & 11 survivors faced a security incident with a Libyan patrol vessel shooting in close range of our fast rescue boats.”
