A member of the European Parliament,  Tineke Strik, has expressed concern about the conditions of migrants and refugees in Tunisia. Tineke Strik said she just concluded her working visit to Tunisia.

Sharing her experience, she said: “I observed a very poor humanitarian situation for refugees and migrants. Many of them live on the streets and rely on the goodwill of Tunisians for basic needs, making them extremely vulnerable for exploitation.

“The refugees and migrants I talked to in both Tunis and Sfax described a very dire situation. They face racism and hostilities, fueled by Saied’s speech. Ever since, more people desperately flee the country. They embark on alarmingly unsafe ships, leading to more deaths.”

Continuing, she said: “Empowering the current repressive government also is a slap in the face of people fighting for democracy and fundamental rights, and may lead to more people escaping.

“Moreover, the deal serves as an EU stamp of approval of the President’s authoritarian drift.

Tunisia is not a safe place, for refugees and migrants. A deal focusing on border control and readmission will lead to more situations of disparity.

“Instead, we need to step up protection and humanitarian aid, create safe pathways and support Tunisian civil society.

Next Thursday, I will confront the Commission with my findings during a public hearing on the deal in the Foreign Affairs committee of the European Parliament.”
