The National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has asked Nigerians to be wary of human traffickers using the internet and technology to carry out their nefarious activities.NAPTIP in a tweet via its verified Twitter handle @naptipnigeria said while trafficking can occur through a variety of avenues, the growth of the internet and technology has given traffickers new ways to carry out their illegal activities.

“This form of trafficking involves the recruitment, exploitation, & sale of individuals through various
online channels. The anonymity & global reach of the internet make it easier for traffickers to operate undetected & connect with potential victims.

“They use social media, fake job offers, dating & other websites to lure vulnerable people into situations of exploitation.
The digital realm provides traffickers with a convenient platform to advertise their victims, coordinate transactions, & maintain control over them.

“It is important for EVERYONE to remain vigilant & to educate themselves about the risks of online trafficking.By doing so,
we can help to protect vulnerable people from exploitation & reduce the prevalence of this crime.

“To report suspicious trafficking activities, call 627 (MTN subscribers only) or 07030000203 (all other networks) right away.”
